This is the story of Saint James

Patron Saint of Loyalists,
Invoked against “Fair-weather” Friendships

Feast Day: July 25

James’ story took place long ago. Actually, there are two James, one known as James the Greater with the other known as James the Lesser. Imagine being called the “Lesser” but the James’s we write about here were both equals; all of us are equals, when all is said and done. James was a loyal and ardent follower of Jesus and James asked to sit at the right hand of God in Heaven. James was the first person to be put to death for his Faith and trust in his friend, Jesus. He was ordered executed by King Herod. It was a death he freely accepted rather than join the “politically correct” by deserting Jesus. James was the type of friend everyone wants and needs. Even during the toughest times and with the greatest personal sacrifice, James held true to his convictions. James was nicknamed “Boanerges” which means “Son of Thunder.” James possessed a fiery temper that displayed itself from time to time. This surely caused some scandal. But we love and admire James for standing up and taking a position that left him alone and unpopular – vilified, and ultimately, dead. All in the name of Loyalty to a friend. Do you have a friend who will go to bat for you in any situation? Is there someone you will go to and support, even during their deepest, darkest hour? We hope you have people who will loyally support you and we hope you will loyally support your friends and stand up with conviction for a friend who is judged to be “wrong” or is simply alone. Showing loyal love to a faltering friend is certainly worth the sacrifice. Wear Saint James to remind yourself of the virtue of Loyalty. As Mark Twain so aptly said, “The proper office of a friend is to stand up for you when you are wrong. Anyone will stand up for you when you are right.” © 1999
