Clare’s story took place long ago. Clare was an independent girl who rejected all the male suitors her parents picked out. Clare heard a Mass conducted by a man named Francis and chose to follow his lead by living in complete poverty and serving the poor. Francis helped Clare by housing her near where he lived. Like Francis, Clare humbly renounced the accumulation of material possessions. She worked zealously for the poor and formed a female group called the “Poor Clares,” the female gender’s equivalent of the Franciscans. It is written that Clare once wanted to go to Christmas Mass but was too ill to attend. Yet Clare somehow miraculously witnessed the Mass while on her deathbed and recounted the occurrences as though she had witnessed the entire sermon on television. When the Poor Clares came home from church, Clare repeated details about the Mass with amazing “Clare”ity! In 1958, the papacy decided that Clare was ahead of her time so they wrote a letter declaring Clare to be the Patron Saint of Television.
