Celebrate Saint George
Today, April 8, 2022!

Today, we celebrate Saint George who is the patron of the military and invoked for their safety. Saint George is also known as the patron of horses, horse lovers, and equestrians.

Saint George was a soldier. One day, he arrived in an area near modern day Libya.  He learned that a dragon had been menacing the townspeople by devouring two of their sheep every day. The town had run out of sheep for the dragon to eat so a lottery was established where a woman was picked by lot of the draw and would then be fed to the dragon. On the day Saint George arrived a young virgin drew the “short stick of the draw” and was about to be eaten by the dragon.

Saint George set forth and battled the dragon. The young woman handed Saint George her girdle which gave him tremendous powers. He pierced the dragon with his lance, saved the woman, and the town. This “Golden Legend of Saint George” has been told, retold, then told again so there are many versions of the story available for your review online.

Our hand-painted medal features the image of Saint George on his horse, holding his lance, and defeating the dragon. It is one of the few medals we found in Rome that are round, not oval shaped, though we do have oval versions available. The round medal is larger and close to the size of a quarter, which is a bit bigger than our other medallions.
