Day # 2: Catholics’ Days Off,

the Speed of Life, Anthony Dabbundo

& the Board Game Clue ….

Saint Cayetano, Patron of Gamblers and the Unemployed is Holding the Cards Close to His Vest. There’s No Pope Yet! But we DISCOUNTED our Saint Cayetano medal just because he should be trending right now.

"The World is Black, The World is White, Together,

It Turns By Day and Then by Night,

The Whole World Looks Upon the Sight,

A Beautiful Sight."

Three Dog Night

Another Day, Another Conclave

Black Smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel yesterday, so the all 133 Cardinals are Flying Back to the Coop of Pope Francis for another day of voting.

The Oddsmakers are dwindling down the possibilities of who will be the Next Pope. Their calculations are stymied by the Centuries Old Adage, ‘Whoever Goes Into the Conclave as Pope, Walks Out a Cardinal.”

I had to have someone explain that to me and Anthony Dabbundo from Philadelphia helped with understanding. You see, if a Cardinal thinks he’s got this Conclave all sewn up and he will be the next Pope …. Is Probably Wrong. He will not be asked if he’d like to be the new Pope. His self-assured “You Got This” mantra is a self-defeating prophesy.

So, Cayetano, our gambling saint is keeping the oddsmakers wondering. Yet, it’s 2025 and people need their information, right quick.

Here’s the latest rundown:

CARDINAL  TAGLE

Our favorite, known as the “Asian Francis,” Cardinal Tagle, is still in the mix. A few curious bits of trivia about Tagle: He likes Social Media and has 643, 000 followers on Instagram. And on Tik Tok, his singing of John Lennon’s “Imagine” went viral. So, as a Cardinal who is compassionate about LGBTQ+ rights, is concerned about migrants and the oppressed, and believes Single Moms and Divorcees deserve a seat at the table, he remains our favorite.

CARDINAL PAROLIN

Cardinal Parolin is still in the running. He was basically Pope Francis’ “Deputy Pope,” according to 2 red birds on my backyard, so he may be in it to win it. I Jus don’t see it happening, though. Those Cardinals are jot going to pick Pope Francis 2. It’s just too logical.

CARDINAL ZUPPI

Bologna, Italy’s “Don Matteo,” is holding firm as a contender. Meeting with Volodymyr in Ukraine, fighting for Peace. That seems quite Pope-like.  Plus he rides around bologna on his bicycle!

CARDINAL PIERBATTISTA PIZZABALLA

With a name like that, I can just see the headlines, “Pizza Boy, He Delivers,” except once he’s elected Pope he has to give up his fun name. And although he’s been great for Jerusalem, at age 60, he is likely too much of a youngster to become “Pope.” Gosh, his reign could last 30 years. The Cardinals do not want to wait 30 years to do their next Conclave. I can’t imagine him causing a billow of white smoke out of the Sistine Chapel.

CARDINAL ERDO

What’s the adage? If you don’t have anything nice to say ….

Although Erdo is against migration, believes gay unions should not, could not, and will not be Blessed in “his” Catholicism. Not now, not ever. IF  you’re a Tridentine Mass and Traditionalist type of Catholic (Who Am I to Judge?) though, Cardinal Erdo is your guy.  He’s just not mine.

CARDINAL TURKSON

Turkson is from Ghana. He has Progressive views, particularly about the Climate Crisis. However, he is from an underrepresented area, Africa, and although I’d like to see him wear the Papal Beanie, just can’t imagine he’s going to be the Pope this time. (Prove me wrong, Cardinals!)

CARDINAL JEAN-MARC AVELINE

Cardinal is from France, out there in the Mediterranean Sea, in Marseille. Known as being pro-migrant, he’d be a nice choice for Pope. In the 1200’s Saint Catherine of Siena convinced the Papacy to move to Rome. Grudges and resentments and flaws to avoid at all cost, but that’s easier said than done. Aveline will not be our next Pope.

So, here’s my analysis: I’m stealing this from the writer, Syracuse University odds maker at www.Ringer.com, Anthony Dabbundo:

If we’re playing the game of Clue….

I say, “I’d take Cardinal Tagle in the Sistine Chapel on the 3rd day, with the Papal name of Luis."

Thanks for reading to the bottom line
