Perhaps, the Last, Local Weekend Newsletter ~ The Gretna Art Walk is taking a Break …. SO, as REO Speedwagon sings, it’s
TIME FOR ME TO FLY!
TLDR?
Hi Everyone –
Although I’ll soon be far away to escape the NOLA heat and humidity …. I’ll still be sending out these Newsletters during the Summer. You can’t get away easily! You’ll have to unsubscribe to really be finished.
While I’ll be away but still rambling and verbose “TLDR” – I’ll also have some photos I hope you will enjoy. And lots of observations. You say you like reading the NL's. I will not disappoint.
Also, FYI, there is an absolutely fantastic team I’ve assembled in New Orleans looking after the business. And you can also always reach me through email and texts. However, as for the orders, our team will still be trying to get everything out at the Speed of Amazon.
GRETNA ART WALK (“GAW”)
The Gretna Art Walk is over until September. I sure will miss setting up the little hand-painted saint medal shop in Gretna on the second Saturday of every month. That is, until next September, when I’ll once again, be participating in the Gretna Art Walk, on the second Saturday of the month. (A Shameless Plug for the GAW!)
I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful people at that event.
A FUN STORY ....
The Gretna Art Walk is just the coolest little hidden secret in New Orleans. What happens at the market should not stay at the market….
When I’m in Rome and France, I’m always on the lookout for cool things to share. Those notes and designs, the prayer cards I find from the late 1800’s, and beyond, so many handwritten notes! They’re treasures and I love seeing (curiously, mostly) women at the GAW digging through all those cards to find their favorite free keepsake.
And the vintage French medallions on key chains. At the GAW, (curiously, mostly) men enjoy filtering through those medals to find one to take home. I think it is maybe because those medals are all a Basket of Historical Nostalgia?
Who knows what I will be bringing there in September, 2025! I have not left so haven't found anything interesting yet …. But I will find because I'm always curiously searching.
At the last GAW market, a man came over to our booth with his wife. He then pulled a medal out from under his shirt. It was one of the larger Miraculous Medals; it clearly wasn’t one of the painted ones we sell.
I was still happy to talk to the man about the Miraculous Medal. He was showing it to me and it’s one of my favorites. Everyone in my family wears the Miraculous Medal. When my sister, Mary Ellen, got married, my Mom insisted that everyone in the wedding party receive a Miraculous Medal. I digress.
TLDR? “IDC!”
Moving along, I mentioned to the man that I loved the medal and he replied, "I know, you told me, and you sold it to me.” I looked and said I didn’t think the medal was one of the ones we offered. Then the man said “That’s because I’ve worn it for years. And all the paint has rubbed off.” I was so surprised because it looked like it was brand new.
We talked a while longer and I finally caught on, and said to myself,
I know what this is!
The man and his wife were Archangel Gabriel's Messengers, his Marketing Agents! So, I suggested that their existence, they are, they were, a wonderful story. Then I asked if I could write it, and "Can I take your pictures!?" I already heard, from an article I read, about other combined letters, NPNR, and that is "No Pics, No Read!" There MUST be pictures - NPNR.
About taking the photographs, the man said “Yes.” She said “Yes.” I fumbled around with my new phone (the one I barely know how to turn on) and took their pictures. Luckily, .... they had the patience of …. Saints! And, here they are, featured above, enjoying the GAW & our MM! What a nice visit.
THESE HAND-PAINTED SAINT MEDALS
It’s a bit incomprehensible. I’m selling hand-painted saint medals with a 100 % Money Back Guarantee “No QUESTIONS ASKED” policy. Yet, not too many people want to replace the medal they buy, or the medal they receive as a gift. They are sort of like those vintage cards and medals of nostalgia I give away. They’re worn out, sort of torn up and scratched with scribblings from long ago.
All treasures, somehow. Their longevity enhances.
Thanks for reading to the bottom line.
