Saint Barbara

Saint Barbara

Patron of converts, firefighters, and explosions
Feast Day: December 4

Barbara’s story took place long ago. Her father, Dioscorus of Heliopolis, was a controlling and abusive person. He forced Barbara to live alone atop a tower so no man would see her beauty. A Christian was permitted to see her when he pretended to be a doctor and Barbara converted to Christianity. When her father was out of town, Barbara instructed workers to install a third window in her tower, in reverence of the Trinity. Dioscorus came home, realized Barbara had become a Christian, and then beat and nearly killed her. He turned Barbara over to the Court who sentenced her to death. Dioscorus volunteered to be her executor and seconds after her death, he was struck by lightning and died himself. In her SfS medal, Barbara is shown near her lonely ivory tower. Pray to Saint Barbara for safe 4th of July celebrations.
