Saint Raphael

Saint Raphael

The Archangel
Patron Saint of Healing
Invoked for Happy Meetings
Feast Day: September 29

Raphael’s story took place long ago. He is one of the 3 Archangels, along with Michael and Gabriel. Raphael’s name means “Remedy of God” and many writings portray Raphael as the Angel who is closest to the everyday person. Raphael is known as a healer and fixer. He is credited with curing the blindness of Tobit, who had been sightless for many years. There was also a lady, named Sara, who had a terrible “cross to bear” in life. She was married 7 times and 7 times her marriages failed; all of her husbands died. Raphael took the human form of a man named Azariah and introduced Tobias to Sara and encouraged them to wed. Azariah then told Tobias how to beat the curse that had befallen all of Sara’s prior suitors. Azariah’s (Raphael’s) advice worked wonders and the couple enjoyed a lasting loving relationship. People pray to Saint Raphael for help in handling illnesses and they also pray to Raphael to bring people together in solid unions. In most artistic renderings, Raphael is shown with a fish. It is the fish he caught with Tobias. The fish figured prominently in the instructions for breaking Sara’s bad luck streak. Pray to Saint Raphael for happy meetings and most especially, for healing.
