Saint Sebastian was a Roman soldier who hid his true Christian identity from Emperor Diocletian in order to serve as a soldier in the army. He was a miraculous healer, and he secretly baptized soldiers and civilians into Christianity. Though Sebastian was eventually executed for his faith, he stood true to himself through both his life and his painful death. His story parallels that of Matthew Shepard who was also murdered, only much more recently, because he was different—like Saint Sebastian. Saint Sebastian is an inspiration to all those persecuted for living their identities and being their true selves.
