Saint Adrian
Patron of Artillery, Gun Safety, Soldiers, and Marksmen
Feast Day: September 8th
Adrian’s story took place long ago. Adrian of Nicodemia was a pagan officer who headed the Herculean Guard of the Roman Emperor Galerius Maximian. At the time, the emperor promised a reward to whoever would inform on Christians to bring them to trial. As Adrian presided over the torture of a band of Christians, he was moved at how they suffered with such courage for their faith.
Seeing how firmly and fearlessly they confessed Christ, he asked, “What rewards do you expect from your God for your suffering?” The mourners replied, “Such rewards as we are able to neither describe, nor can your mind comprehend.” St. Adrian was so amazed at their courage, he turned to the scribes and said, “Write my name down also, for I am a Christian and I die gladly for Christ God,” though he had not himself yet been baptized. When the scribes informed the emperor, he summoned Adrian, and asked him, “Really, have you gone mad, that you want to die?” Adrian answered, “I have not lost my mind, but rather I have found it.”
He was martyred by way of having his hands and legs broken by an anvil. His immense show of courage by defending what he believed earns him the patronage of prison guards, soldiers, and all those who answer the call to protect and serve a body of people.
