Saint Dominic
Patron of the Church of St. Dominic and the Dominicans
Feast Day: August 8
Dominic’s story took place long ago. When Dominic was born his mother saw a star shining through his chest. This has led Dominic to be very popular with astronomers. When Dominic got older he came up with a unique way of resolving arguments. Dominic would throw all the books about the debated issue into a fire and it was his belief that the errors would burn up while the truth would survive without scorch. Dominic was allowed to establish an Order and he modeled it after Saint Augustine’s, creating the Dominicans, a group of holy men devoted to learning, practical poverty and above all, the Ministry of Preaching (the “Order of Preachers”). In the SfS medal, Dominic is shown holding a book, perhaps one that survived the ravages of the fires described above and also a lily, which is also one of his symbols. If you look very closely at Dominic’s hand you will also see he is holding a Rosary, which is not surprising since many writings credit Dominic with creating the Rosary! Pray to Saint Dominic when looking for truth or when trying to lose distrust. Attend Saint Dominic’s Church and you will find yourself comforted by the Ministry of Preaching coming from many kindly practitioners. One of our favorite Priests is the Very Reverend Father Neil W. McDermott, Saint Dominic’s former Pastor and Dean, who helped the creator of SaintsforSinners.com during a very difficult time. It was many years ago but the fond memory and appreciation lives on and on and on, never to be forgotten. © 2001
