Saint Lorenzo Ruiz was born in the Philippines to a Chinese father and Filipina mother. He was skilled in calligraphy and worked as a transcriptionist. To escape a false accusation of murder, Lorenzo traveled to Japan with a group of Dominican priests. Rather than escaping harm, however, Lorenzo was martyred in Japan after refusing to renounce his Catholic faith, thus becoming the first Filipino martyr saint. Saint Lorenzo Ruiz is the patron of the Philippines as well as secretaries and calligraphers.
