BIG NEWS OF THE DAY! The Who’s Your Saint Quiz is working better it seems! There was a downloading issue that was driving me crazy.
Today we celebrate Saint Agathawho is invoked against breast cancer and other cancers. Saint Agatha is one of our most sought-after designs. Like Saint Peregrine, Saint Agatha fights against the many forms of cancer. Many wear and share her medal and she provides a source of comfort, even without the medal. I have cool prayer cards of her and if you send a SASE (Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope) I’ll send you one.
Saint Agatha of Sicily’s story has a few stories and they all show that Saint Agatha was strong, independent, and brave. It is true she suffered much cruelty yet the way she governed herself shows how truly remarkable Agatha was throughout her life. Agatha basically wanted to consecrate, or give over, her life to God.
A guy named Quinctianus went after Agatha and wanted her and her body badly. Agatha said, “No Go!” So Quinctianus sent her to a brothel where again she said, “I’m not taking customers!” This enraged the men. A judge rendered a harsh judgment against her that was painful to her breasts so she told him:
“Cruel man, have you forgotten your mother and the breast that nourished you, that you dare to mutilate me this way?”
The judge dismissed her and she was tortured and killed. Still, she acted impervious saying something like “Good, my life is over and I will not have to suffer you wretched people or pain any longer.”
Some say the volcanic eruptions of Mount Etna can be attributed to Saint Agatha. She reminds us of Saint Lawrence, who never gave in and always stood his ground resolutely. We will write about him on Monday!
