Saint Catherine of Siena

Saint Catherine of Siena

Patron of "cool" and "girl power"
Invoked against family feuds and illiteracy
Feast Day: April 29

Catherine of Siena’s story took place long ago. She was one of the youngest in her family and had 24 brothers and sisters! As a teenager she was fiercely independent, cut her hair short and hid when it came time to get married. Catherine’s parents wanted her to marry and have children but that was not in the cards so they finally relented and said she could join a Convent. Catherine didn’t do that either! Catherine was the epitome of cool, marching to her own drum and living her own life. After torrential family disruption, Catherine’s parents accepted that she just wasn’t the “marryin’ kind.” Catherine’s was going to live her own life. Catherine became an adviser to leaders of Church and State. Kings and Dukes sought her advice. When she wasn’t advising leaders she was caring for the sick and elderly. She was illiterate but did dictate a masterpiece, The Dialogue. Saints and other celebrities-of-the-day befriended Catherine. Her ability to communicate with the rich and poor, old and young and all those in-between enabled Catherine to attain great intuition. She was one of the greatest peacemakers of all time. No quarrel was too big for Catherine to resolve; she was a fabulous mediator. In 1970, Saint Catherine of Siena was named a “Doctor of the Church.” Only 3 women have been given the title so it is quite a distinction. Catherine even convinced the Papacy to return to Rome! Pray to Saint Catherine when someone or something is bugging you; Saint Catherine of Siena will help you find a new way of understanding others. And that is always cool! © 1999
