John Fisher - John of Rochester - Patron Saint Teaching, Writing, Longdon, England

      John Fisher is also known as John of Rochester. He was born in the 15th Century and studied at Cambridge University. He was known as a skilled teacher and writer and was the tutor for Henry VIII before he became King.    He worked to raise the standards of teaching and ironically, his integrity for teaching led to his downfall. In 1527 John was asked to study the issue of King Henry VIII’s marriage. John ultimately found the marriage to be valid and defended its existence. This infuriated King Henry because he wanted to declare himself the Head of the Church in England. John was imprisoned and waited over a year for his trial, which never resulted. The Pope declared John a Cardinal in 1535 and then King Henry had John hanged, drawn and quartered on Tower Hill in London. John’s head was exhibited on London Bridge for two weeks as example. He was buried in the church of All Hallows in Barking England and afforded neither rites nor a shroud of marker. John’s Relics lie in Saint Peter’s Church in the Tower of London.
