Ann is the Mother of the Virgin Mary and Grandmother of Jesus. Her name is derived from the name Hannah and means “Grace.” Ann was married to Joachim and the couple did not have children for many years. Joachim and Ann were criticized in their community because they did not have any children. Joachim decided to go off into the desert for 40 days; he prayed for God to send a baby! Ann also prayed and an Angel, Gabriel, appeared and said the prayers were answered! Soon after, Ann had a baby who later became known as Mother Mary. Ann is honored as the Patroness of Mothers and also of those who teach people to read. Many also pray to Saint Ann to ask her for help in bringing the most precious gift available: The Gift of Life. On our medal, Ann is shown with a little girl by her side. The little girl is a very young Mary, learning how to read, before she became the most popular woman in the history of the world. Praise the Mother of all Mothers, Mary’s Mom, Saint Ann, the true Mother of Grace.  ©1999
