Saint Expedite is very popular in New Orleans. His story is very unusual and it’s actually not certain he is an Official Saint. Some doubt he ever existed at all, but there are some Holy Ladies in New Orleans who would offer debate.
Apparently, some Ursuline Nuns received a package that was as large as a coffin! On the outside of the box the word “Expeditus” was written. When the Nuns opened it, they found a mysterious cadaver! The Nuns were not sure what they should do so they prayed and prayed and finally came to the conclusion that “all things happen for a reason,” so they named the body Expedite. After all, that was the word scrawled outside the package. It was a “sign!”
Over the years, Saint Expedite became very popular. His body had been delivered to the Saint Jude Shrine on Rampart Street, near the edge of the French Quarter. Some say he is invoked in Hindu Rituals in efforts to speed their quest for results. He also has a following in Voodoo Folklore.
Another bit of Folklore presents the notion that saint Expedite can help with money matters. There’s a prayer to be said, somewhat similar to the Saint Anthony Prayer we wrote about yesterday.
This is the prayer to Saint Expedite that may help people with their finances, or lack thereof:
Money Prayer to Saint Expedite:
“I ask you, Saint Expedite, to aid me in my financial difficulties. Let your strength and support protect my income and help me obtain enough money so that I will not suffer need and want.”
Saint Expedite may offer luck and good fortune. You may want to “check in” with Saint Expedite when you buy a Powerball Lotto ticket, go to the racetrack, or when you’re rooting for your favorite basketball team in the NCAA Final Four “March Madness” Basketball Tournament.
Perhaps Saint Expedite has a bit of Irish Heritage. Today’s a great day to believe in the story of Saint Expedite. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day. May the “Luck O’ the Irish” be with you today and always.
