Today, we celebrate Saint Rocco, the patron saint of dogs and dog lovers, generally, yet also the patron of those who rescue lost and abandoned dogs.  There are thousands of animal rescue organizations throughout the world. Still, there are too few homes for too many dogs in need of a “Forever Home.” One rescue close to our hearts is Take Paws Rescue here in New Orleans who saved over 1500 dogs in 2020 alone!

We are thinking Saint Charbel (sometimes known as Sharbel ) is a worthy Saint to reach out to now. I am sure if you look around in your town, there is an event where you can have your favorite pet, be it dog, cat, turtle, iguana, ferret, guinea pig, horse, or bunny, blessed. There are lots of saints that look after those animals, but Saint Francis looks after them all too!

We are writing about Shepherding and the Good Shepherd, and also Shepherdess, Saint Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes, combined with the Shepherd adorned Pectoral Cross of Pope Francis and Saint Agnes holding a lamb. Oh, and Agnus Dei too! This is going to hopefully flow, believe it or not!

A bit of an Update Regarding COVID19, it seems the various communities have come to a consensus that Saint Rock/Roch/Rocco is the “Go To” saint to ask for intercession with the pandemic. Most Google searches seem to point to Saint Rocco, as we have done, although we thought San Bernardino of Siena was a nice choice too.

On Sunday, February 16th, the Annual Barkus Parade is held in the French Quarter of New Orleans. It’s part of the Mardi Gras Celebrations that prepare us for Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. It also raises money for our local ASPCA!
