8th Day of Lent - Saint Joseph & Saint Joseph the Worker 🙏 Patron of Faith, Trust, Carpenters, Builders, & Woodworkers
On this 8th Calendar Day of Lent, March 9th, 2022, we are celebrating Saint Joseph who is also known and often referred to as Saint Joseph the Worker.
The most popular image of Saint Joseph shows Joseph with the Christ child, or “Baby Jesus.” The story and medal exemplify the great trust Joseph had regarding his wife, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Joseph had been away from home for many weeks and when he returned, he learned that Mary had experienced the “Immaculate Conception.” Mary was pregnant and would soon give birth to Baby Jesus. Imagine how Joseph felt about that!
Joseph was able to muster all the faith and strength and hope possible and he dutifully looked after his wife Mary during her pregnancy. A few months later, on December 25th, Mary gave birth to Jesus in a desolate manger. Angels appeared and 3 Wise Men brought gifts of Frankincense, Myrrh, and Gold as Baptism Gifts, which were very appreciated. Joseph and Mary and Baby Jesus were likely able to get a better room to stay in after the Wise Men brought those gifts.
Another popular image of Saint Joseph shows him at a work bench. Joseph was a carpenter by trade and very handy with his tools. This is probably why Saint Joseph the Worker is known as the patron saint of builders and wood workers. He built foundations for Jesus and Mary to live in while Jesus was very young.
Many celebrate Saint Joseph with Saint Joseph’s Altars. The Feast Day of Saint Joseph is March 19th. In Switzerland, Saint Joseph’s Day is a Public Holiday. As the husband of Mary and stepfather of Jesus, Joseph’s story has led many to consider Saint Joseph as the patron of fathers and stepfathers, very apt patronages indeed.
